Tuesday 24 September 2013 - Sunday 15 December 2013
Hayward Gallery’s autumn exhibitions explore the work of two major female artists: Ana Mendieta and Dayanita Singh.
Ana Mendieta: Traces
24 September – 15 December
Hayward Gallery Lower Level
Using her own body, together with elemental materials such as blood, fire, earth and water, Ana Mendieta creates visceral performances and ephemeral ‘earth-body’ sculptures that combine ritual with metaphors about life, death, rebirth and spiritual transformation. ‘I wanted my images to have power, to be magic,’ she said. ‘I decided that for the images to have magic qualities I had to work directly with nature.’

Dayanita Singh: Go Away Closer
8 October – 15 December
Hayward Gallery Upper Level
Internationally-acclaimed photographer Dayanita Singh breaks away from the print-on-the-wall tradition in a major new body of work, presented for the first time at Hayward Gallery. In a further advance on her experimental bookmaking, in which photography becomes a starting point rather than an end in itself, Go Away Closer presents Singh’s new portable Museums of stories, themes and image-repertoires, alongside her most well-known series of works, such as Dream Villa, Blue Book, I am as I am, Bombay Portraits and the Mona portfolio.
