Overture Gamalanathon | Southbank Centre

Overture Gamalanathon

8-10 June 2007

To celebrate the grand re-opening of the Royal Festival Hall a ‘Gamelanathon’ was held during the Overture Festival, to mark the return of the gamelan to Southbank Centre and the re-launch of the gamelan programme.

The Pendhapa (Outdoor Pavilion)

To stage the event, Southbank Centre Learning & Participation Department commissioned a specially designed and constructed outdoor pavilion - based on the concept of the Javanese Pendhapa - from Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design. Students enrolled on the MA Creative Practice for Narrative Environments course thoroughly researched the event brief and Southbank Centre site and then pitched their ideas for their finished pavilion.

The winning teams produced not only a spectacular pavilion, but also new storage crates for the Southbank Centre portable gamelan that could double as audience seats for the outdoor performances.

Central St. Martin's Credits:
Tricia Austin - Course Director, MA CPNE, Central St. Martin’s
Sarah Featherstone - Tutor, Featherstone Associates, Architects

In addition to designing and constructing the pavilion, the St. Martin’s students participated in gamelan workshops, learning to play the instruments and eventually performing during the ‘gamelanathon’. Thanks to Rachel Harris, Julie Flavell, Michael Vale, Simon Wingfield, Hilary Cohen and Mick Shenton of Southbank Centre for overseeing the project design and production.

Many thanks also to Suraya and Suyono for tuning the gamelans in time for the Overture celebrations.

'Gamelanathon'

The ‘gamelanathon’ started on the evening of Friday 8th June with a performance on the Clore Ballroom by Southbank Gamelan Players (SBGP), Ensemble in Residence at Southbank Centre. They were directed by Rahayu Supanggah, Southbank Centre Artist in Residence supported by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, who arrived from Java for a month of rehearsals leading up to the Overture Festival. Performing with SBGP was dancer Ni Madé Pujawati in resplendent Javanese costume. Southbank Gamelan Players performed three different sets during the ‘Gamelanathon’ - one for each day of the weekend. After their inaugural performance, members of the wider gamelan community were invited to join SBGP and Supanggah for an unrehearsed klenengan (gamelan performance) which lasted until 1.30am on the Ballroom.

During the course of the weekend, fourteen gamelan moves were carried out by Southbank Centre Production Department and Production House crew, to stage performances on the Clore Ballroom, Level 5 Function Room and outdoor performances on the Riverside Pavilion.

SBGP were joined by 24 gamelan ensembles from across the UK for a range of performances including traditional Javanese, Balinese and Sundanese repertoire, new compositions for gamelan, dance, and experimental electronic and gamelan fusion.

Good Vibrations - Peterborough Prison

Group Facilitator: John Pawson

Since 2003, the Good Vibrations project has run gamelan projects across the UK, working in 11 prisons and 2 secure hospitals and with over 700 prisoners. The aim is to help prisoners develop crucial life skills like how to listen, communicate and work as a team, and also to enhance their confidence in their abilities to achieve something constructive and ppositive. Gamelan, being both very accessible and communal, has been found to be particularly effective at achieving this. Peterborough prison, run by Kalyx Limited, recently invested in its own set of gamelan instruments and is running a year-round programme for the inmates. This group brings together current and ex-inmates from Peterborough and is the first Good Vibrations group to perform in the community.

Thanks to: the Director and staff of Peterborough Prison, Kalyx Limited, Firebird trust, Arts Council England, Linbury Trust, Northmoor Trust, Tudor Trust, and most of all, to the men themselves for their hard work and achievements.
