Royal Visit

To mark the official re-opening of the Royal Festival Hall, a Royal Gala was staged in the auditorium and Spirit Level, to welcome HRH Queen Elizabeth II back to Southbank Centre 56 years after the venue first opened. Pupils from Edmund Waller Primary School in New Cross were amongst the performers, artists and special guests who greeted the Queen.

The gamelan room was beautifully lit for a performance by Gamelan Naga Mas (and friends) who visited all the way from Glasgow to perform for Her Majesty and other guests.

Gamelan Naga Mas were joined by 11 year old Joshua Panda from Edmund Waller Primary School, who introduced the Queen to the bonangs - horizontally mounted gong chimes.

Gamelan Naga Mas then performed their own instrumental arrangement of Langgam ‘Caping Nggunung’ based on a popular Javanese song.

Gamelan Naga Mas (Glasgow):
Natalia Bahrin, Theodora Bayly, Colin Broom, Hooi Ling Eng, Jon Keliehor, Katherine Waumsley, Alice Jane MacLean, Martin Sewell

Joined by London-based gamelan musicians:
Matthew Isaac Cohen, John Pawson & Sophie Clark.
