The great Kandyan Kings of Sri Lanka who outlasted centuries of raids by the Portuguese, Dutch and Indians, finally gave way to British control in 1815, Sri Lankan dance forms, themselves hybrids of very ancient indigenous tribal forms and southern Indian dance, have been depicted in art and architecture since the third century BC.
