Steel Pan-orama

Saturday 23 July 2011

Sixty years ago on the South Bank the sounds of the Trinidad All Steel Percussion Orchestra lit up the Festival of Britain. One of its members, Sonny Roach, said at the time, 'By the time we leave every Englishman will have a pan.'

To celebrate this anniversary, a range of youth steel bands from across the UK ignite the Southbank Centre site with the magical sounds of the pans from 1pm to 6pm, culminating in a massed finale in The Clore Ballroom at Royal Festival Hall. Featuring The Pan Nation Steel Band, Leeds Silver Steel Sparrows, Leeds Silver Steel Doves, Charles Edward Brooke Girls' School's Pan Africa, and North Tyneside Steel Band.
