Gustav Holst: The Planets
Joby Talbot: Worlds, Stars, Systems, Infinity (World premiere)

Step inside one of the most popular pieces of classical music, Holst's 'The Planets', with the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen.

Paul Rissmann leads an afternoon's musical journey through Holst's astrological portrait of seven planets, including Mars (Bringer of War), Jupiter (Bringer of Jollity) and Venus (Bringer of Peace), together with Joby Talbot's new companion piece 'Worlds, Stars, Systems, Infinity'.

In the first half of the concert Rissmann, Salonen and the Orchestra explore the piece from the inside out, using large-screen projection, musical demonstrations and interviews to bring it to life.

In the second half Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts a full-scale performance of The Planets, culminating in the world première of Joby Talbot's music.

This is a rare opportunity to see into the heart of a great classic, equally suitable for the seasoned concert-goer or the uninitiated.

Not suitable for children under the age of six.

Running time: two hours 15 minutes, including interval.
