Richard Strauss: Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche
Alban Berg: Violin Concerto
Ludwig Van Beethoven: Symphony No.6 (Pastoral)
Arabella Steinbacher performs Berg's Violin Concerto with conductor Andris Nelsons in a programme which includes Strauss Till Eulenspiegel and Beethoven's Pastoral Symphony.
This programme features three highly autobiographical masterworks. The 'Pastoral' Symphony is Beethoven's ultimate musical response to nature, his most cherished and dependable companion in life.
In Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche ('Till Eulenspiegel's merry pranks') the exuberant young Strauss clearly associates himself with the main character as he gleefully wreaks havoc in a market place and upsets a group of passing nuns, disguised as a clergyman.
Berg's Violin Concerto, composed to 'the memory of an angel', is a heartbreaking lament for Manon Gropius, the beautiful daughter of Alma Mahler (composer Gustav's widow) by her second marriage.Performers
