On this date in 1813, the Philharmonic Society gave its first public concert in London. As part of the Royal Philharmonic Society's Bicentenary celebrations, this talk looks at what concert life was like 200 years ago and how the recognised classics of today, including Schumann's Symphony No. 2, were introduced to British audiences.

'This is really a special treat for me to work with period instruments and be really immersed in the history. You're immediately taken back to how the orchestra developed, why it developed the way it did, and what the challenges were when the composer was writing. I love working with the OAE because it brings me closer to the creative process.' Marin Alsop
