Born in Georgia and trained in Moscow, Elisabeth Leonskaja was much influenced by the great pianist Sviatoslav Richter, with whom she often performed in a duo.
Tonight she opens her recital by showcasing three very different composers from the early 20th century, Ravel, Enescu and Debussy, all of whom developed individual harmonic styles that could convey a fabulous range of atmospheres.

The second half is devoted to Brahms's finest piano sonata, a five-movement work of immense range, influenced by the strength of Beethoven and the tenderness of Schumann.
