'If the word mercurial did not exist, it would have to be invented for this remarkable musician' (The Herald).
Born in Georgia and trained in Moscow, Elisabeth Leonskaja was much influenced by the great pianist Sviatoslav Richter, with whom she often performed in a duo.
Tonight she opens her recital by showcasing three very different composers from the early 20th century, Ravel, Enescu and Debussy, all of whom developed individual harmonic styles that could convey a fabulous range of atmospheres.
The second half is devoted to Brahms's finest piano sonata, a five-movement work of immense range, influenced by the strength of Beethoven and the tenderness of Schumann.Performers
