Just Look What We Started
Since 1977 and the founding of Shape (a disability-led arts organisation working to improve access to culture for disabled people), the UK has led the way internationally as the leading force in Disability Arts.
Hear from three people who have been at the forefront of the movement since its inception as they explore where the impetus came from and what impact it has had on the art world we see today.
The three speakers are -
Sarah Scott, former Disability Policy Officer at Arts Council England and signed song performer.
Chief Executive of Shape Tony Heaton.
Jenny Sealy MBE, Artistic Director of Graeae and co-director of the Paralympics opening ceremony.
This is the first event in Unlimited Voices - a series of discussion and debate as part of Southbank Centre's Unlimited Festival, running from 30 August to 9 September. This event will be preceded by a special welcome to Unlimited Voices. Artistic Director of Southbank Centre Jude Kelly and Joyce Wilson, Director of Combined Arts and Capital, Arts Council England, set the scene surrounding the first ever commissioning fund for disabled artists and disability-led work to feature as part of a Cultural Olympiad.
This event is BSL interpreted and speech-to-text transcribed. Please notify a member of staff on arrival to be shown to the best seats for viewing the interpreter and speech-to-text screen.
