Petrenko conducts Rachmaninov

Vasily Petrenko conducts a programme of orchestral showpieces, ending with Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances, the movements of which seem to summarise Rachmaninov's compositional life.

The Symphonic Dances were among Rachmaninov's last works. Originally with programmatic movement titles of 'Noon', 'Twilight' and 'Midnight', the three movements almost seem to summarise Rachmaninov's compositional life, with quotations from his First Symphony and the Dies irae leitmotif that haunts so many of his works.

The programme opens with one of Hindemith's most popular works, full of the dancing melodies of Weber set into a true showpiece for orchestra, and Sibelius's Violin Concerto forms the haunting and dark-hued heart of this concert.

Brahms's Ein deutsches Requiem

Brahms's German Requiem is achingly beautiful, dwelling on the hope of the resurrection as well as consoling those who remain on earth.

Brahms first considered writing a Requiem Mass after the death of his close friend Robert Schumann, but was only catapulted into its composition a decade later after the death of his mother caused him inconsolable grief. He completed his tribute to her four years later with a mass unlike any conventional Requiem.

Ein deutsches Requiem sets sections of Luther's translation of the Bible, dwelling far more on the hope of the resurrection than on the fear of Judgement Day. The first movement, 'Blessed are they that mourn', consoles those that remain on Earth with achingly beautiful suspensions from the chorus. The work moves through divinely beautiful music to the dramatic highlight of Brahms's tone-painting of the resurrection of the dead. Yet the work ends back on an earthly level, a reminder that we cannot know what awaits us.

Late Romanticism

Rich, moving, magical - hear musical Romanticism in its last throes at this concert of works from the first decade of the 20th century.

Gustav Mahler's culminating synthesis of song and symphony, Das Lied von der Erde, is the composer's most profound musical exploration of what life means.

It is a piece whose concurrent darkness and radiance changed the parameters of vocal and orchestral expression forever and placed a full-stop on the most remarkable compositional career of the age.

The evening opens with the gentle, undulating beauty of Webern's Im Sommerwind, followed by Schoenberg's demonstrations of condensed orchestral effect, his Five Orchestral Pieces.

LUTOSLAWSKI CENTENARY: MUSIC IN POLAND 1913-2013

Continuing the Lutoslawski anniversary celebrations Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts the Concerto for Orchestra and Cello Concerto alongside Debussy's La Mer.

Our Lutoslawski centenary celebrations continue with two major works of crucial importance. The virtuoso fast-reflexes of the Concerto for Orchestra form a blazing climax to his early period and mark a new fascination with Bartók and the musical potential of indigenous folksong, while the glorious Cello Concerto (1970), commissioned originally by the Royal Philharmonic Society, which is celebrating its 200th anniversary this year, was composed during a time of great political unrest in Poland.

Debussy's principal aim in La Mer was 'to create a mysterious harmony between nature and the imagination', something that clearly had a vital impact on Lutoslawski's own creative thinking.

Maazel conducts Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky

Maestro Maazel conducts an all-Russian programme. Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No.2 with soloist Vadim Repin, excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Tchaikovsky's Pathétique Symphony.

Few symphonies have attracted as much conspiracy theory as Tchaikovsky's Pathétique. Just nine days after its 1893 premiere, the composer died suddenly. Was the symphony's brooding solemnity - with its pathos and final descent into eerie silence - a portent of Tchaikovsky's own demise? Or indeed a symphonic suicide note?

Whatever the truth behind the enigma, the Sixth certainly took its emotional toll on Tchaikovsky, who declared that 'I have without exaggeration put my whole soul into this work...'

This all-Russian concert also features Prokofiev's Second Violin Concerto and selected excerpts from Romeo and Juliet.

Roméo et Juliette

Sir Mark Elder conducts the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in a performance of Berlioz's mammoth Roméo et Juliette.

'His orchestration is so dirty that I have to wash my hands after turning over the pages of his scores,' said Mendelssohn of Berlioz.

Berlioz was never one to do things by halves, and Roméo et Juliette is probably one of his most ambitious projects - the first performance had an orchestra of more than 100 players, a chorus of 101 voices plus soloists.

It is a passionate, lush piece which pushed the limits of what an orchestra could do and its vivid and dramatic scene-setting upstages that of many operas.

Messiah

In 1784 Handel's visionary, ecstatic Messiah was revived in a huge performance at Westminster Abbey, an event that ensured its still iconic status.

Today, we often take it for granted that musicians perform classical music from all ages - from Monteverdi right up to the present day, but that wasn't always the case. In the past, music was much more disposable (dare we say it, a little like some of today's pop music). Things were performed, became briefly popular and then disappeared. However, London became one of the first places to look back at the history of music, when Handel's glorious Messiah was revived in 1784, ensuring the work it's legendary, iconic status.

A Saint, a Priest and a Great Bear

This joyous, celebratory concert contains some of the best-loved Baroque choral music in the repertoire.

Purcell's bright and sparkling Ode for St Cecilia's Day starts the evening off and is followed by Handel's extraordinarily powerful anthem, Zadok the Priest.

The concert ends with more music from Handel (apparently nicknamed The Great Bear by Londoners) with his glorious piece for five vocal soloists and orchestra.

Queens, Heroines and Ladykillers: French Exchange

The Queens, Heroines and Ladykillers series continues with a programme that features the best of English and French Baroque and which demonstrates how French musical styles became fashionable in England too.

The programme includes music from French masters Lully and Rameau, including the Dardanus Suite which we defy you not to nod your head or tap your foot to.

Also included is the devastating lament from the Purcell's mini operatic masterpiece, Dido and Aeneas.

Fast rising star Jonathan Cohen conducts and the world-renowned soprano (and regular OAE collaborator) Sarah Connolly is the soloist.

A Touch of Brass

An all-Mozart programme, centred around the composer's richly melodic Fourth Horn Concerto.

Margaret Faultless, leader of the OAE, directs this all-Mozart programme. The concert starts with Mozart's Linz Symphony, which despite being written in only a matter of days, is a graceful, thoughtful work with an unusually lively, skipping last movement.

Mozart's Posthorn Serenade is so-called as one movement features a valveless horn, the same type that was used in Mozart's day to signal the arrival of the postal coach.

The centre-piece of the evening is Mozart's lyrical Fourth Horn Concerto, featuring thrilling fanfares and brilliant dialogue between the solo instrument and orchestra.

Dramatic Women: Three eras of divas

The OAE's Dramatic Heroines series opens with Sir Roger Norrington and star soprano Anna Caterina Antonacci.

Anna Caterina Antonacci joins the OAE for this concert that opens both the Orchestra's 2012/13 season and the Dramatic Heroines series. She sings three arias spanning three different musical eras, including an aria by Cherubini made famous by Maria Callas and a touching yet powerful aria from Berlioz.

Also in the programme is Gluck's viscerally thrilling Dance of the Furies and Bizet's fresh and uninhibited Symphony in C.

Queens, Heroines and Ladykillers: A Tribute to Lorraine Hunt Lieberson

Lorraine Hunt Lieberson was one of the foremost sopranos of our time, and an artist the OAE worked with regularly, most notably at Glyndebourne and on CD.

Tonight's tribute to her sees three great sopranos take to the Royal Festival Hall stage to sing some of Handel's most dramatic and emotionally intense arias, interspersed with some of his gutsy orchestra music. A very special way to end the OAE's concert season.

Queens, Heroines and Ladykillers: Curtain raisers and high drama

Marin Alsop conducts a dramatic evening of Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann.

Concerts don't get much more dramatic than this. The evening begins with Mozart's Idomeneo, which builds from a brooding start to a heady climax before subsiding to where it began. It's the perfect curtain-raiser for a series of dramatic arias written for the female voice.

Schumann's Second Symphony is perhaps his least-known, but it has been hailed as the composers most complete vision for the orchestra and contains some hugely powerful music - not least in the blazing final movement.

Mozart's Eroica

Tonight's concert sees a pair of Mozart's greatest piano concertos being performed by one of the world's greatest pianists, András Schiff.

The Ninth Piano Concerto was dubbed 'Mozart's Eroica' by none other than Albert Einstein, and the work contains a sublime and tender middle movement contained by two feisty outer movements.

Piano Concerto No.24 is perhaps better known and builds out of a spectacularly moody and muscular opening.

The evening's musical sandwich is one of Haydn's typically fresh and zesty symphonies, though again dark menacing undertones can be heard underneath the bright melodies.

By Jupiter, that's the last of Mozart!

Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment Principal Artist Sir Simon Rattle joins the Orchestra to conduct Mozart's last three symphonies.

Although written in relatively quick succession, these three works offer great contrasts. Symphony No.39 is full of wide, flowing melodies, whilst Symphony No.40 plumbs deep emotional depths and is perhaps one of the most tragic pieces that Mozart penned. Conversely, his last Symphony, No.41 'Jupiter', rounds the evening off in an explosion of sheer joy, energy and exuberance.

Haydn's vibrant oratorio The Creation, with Adam Fischer and an all-star cast of soloists.

Haydn's oratorio The Creation is not only one of the composer's most popular pieces, but is also one of the most vividly descriptive pieces of classical music there is. Each aspect of the story is brilliantly brought to life by Haydn's expressive music - you can really hear the black emptiness before the First Day, the lion leaping and experience the heat of the sun as it rises - and the added contrast and texture of period instruments only adds to the effect.

A wonderful way to start the new year.

Steve Reich Radio Rewrite - world premiere

The London Sinfonietta gives the world premiere of Radio Rewrite, a new work from master of minimalism Steve Reich, inspired by the music of Radiohead. Reich also performs Clapping Music.

Radio Rewrite is a co-commission by the London Sinfonietta and New York's Alarm Will Sound.

John Wilson conducts Lehár's unforgettable Merry Widow.

It has been said with some justification that the Silver Age of operetta began on 30 December 1905 with the Viennese premiere of Lehár's The Merry Widow.

This non-stop riot of orchestral colour, irrepressible joi-de-vivre and inspired sequences of unforgettable waltz tunes suited the mood of the times to perfection, from the champagne-cork popping of Habsburg Vienna, to the insatiable bonhomie of pre-Great War Paris and the Edwardian era's obsession with dance music in London.

It swiftly became an international sensation, making the struggling Lehár into a feted celebrity and a multi-millionaire into the bargain!

Jurowski conducts Prokofiev and Shostakovich

Jurowski conducts contrasting works by three Russian composers.

Prokofiev's second Violin Concerto is said to represent the composer's focus on a 'new simplicity', but it's a warm, heartfelt piece nonetheless as the composer's long-breathed melodies mingle with moments of haunting stillness and thought.
Shostakovich, too, had to alter course with his Sixth Symphony. After the Soviet authorities accepted the masked rebellion of his Fifth, Shostakovich felt compelled to be more honest and open. Under the surface of the Sixth - first brooding and then bustling - emerges a grotesque picture of persecution ending in a gallop that portrayed, for one commentator, 'a brazen display of vulgarity'.

Beethoven & Tchaikovsky

Yan Pascal Tortelier conducts the London Philharmonic in a programme of Beethoven and Tchaikovsky.

Fate. It has hung dagger-like over the art of music since Beethoven seized it by the throat. In 1877, Tchaikovsky felt its weighty hand on his shoulder. His artistic response was a symphony unlike anything he'd created before. 'This is fate,' he revealed to his confidante Nadezhda von Meck, explaining the opening notes of his heart-on-sleeve Fourth Symphony. But by the Symphony's final chapter, Tchaikovsky's darkness had turned to light. 'Rejoice in other's rejoicing,' he urged Nadezhda, and the symphony veered towards the sort of unstoppable, ebullient confidence and joy that Beethoven captures so gloriously in his First Piano Concerto.
