If you missed out on the sensational Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela residency in 2009, join the party again this season.
Venezuela’s El Sistema is one of the most extraordinary youth social projects in the world. It has produced ensembles of outstanding quality, including the world-famous Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, and this season Southbank Centre welcomes several more of them to London.
The Teresa Carreño Youth Orchestra of Venezuela the sister orchestra to the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra – has chosen Royal Festival Hall to make its debut UK appearance.
‘The Orchestra has really wonderful players,’ explains Venezuelan violinist Alejandro Carreño. ‘They have this magic energy and precision. They are amazing.’
There are also performances from the Venezuelan Brass Ensemble and the Simón Bolívar String Quartet, which Carreño leads. ‘Playing in the string quartet really opens your ear and your mind to new ideas,’ he says.
However, for all musicians in El Sistema, says Carreño, their overriding passion is for creating music that is ‘made with passion, love and all your heart. Music is music, and art is art. For us, it’s not separated.’
