Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Philharmonia OrchestraResident at Southbank Centre

Another exciting season from the Philharmonia Orchestra sees the culmination of its two major series of 2011. Infernal Dance: Inside the World of Béla Bartók, conducted by Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Esa-Pekka Salonen, ends with a semi-staged performance of Duke Bluebeard’s Castle featuring specially commissioned video projections. Lorin Maazel’s Mahler Cycle also draws to a close with performances of Mahler’s Eighth and Ninth Symphonies and Das Lied von der Erde.

The second half of the season introduces the Philharmonia’s major series of 2012, The Still Point of the Turning World: music that defines an era, which features five iconic works of the last 150 years that have a special personal significance for their conductors. Further highlights of the season include visits from the Philharmonia’s other titled conductors, Christoph von Dohnányi and Vladimir Ashkenazy; Esa-Pekka Salonen inaugurating a Beethoven symphonic series; a screening of Ben Hur accompanied by a live performance of Carl Davis’ soundtrack; and concerts celebrating the 150th anniversary of Delius’ birth and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
